Chronic Atmospheric Reactive Nitrogen Deposition Suppresses Biological Nitrogen Fixation in Peatlands

چکیده

Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) represents the natural pathway by which mosses meet their demands for bioavailable/reactive (Nr) in peatlands. However, following intensification of fertilizer and fossil fuel use, atmospheric Nr deposition has increased exposing peatlands to loading often above ecological threshold. As BNF is energy intensive, therefore, it unclear whether shuts down when availability no longer a rarity. We studied response under gradient extending over decades three U.K., at background peatland Sweden. Experimental fertilization plots Swedish site were also evaluated activity. In situ activity receiving 6, 17, 27 kg N ha–1 yr–1 was not shut but rather suppressed 54, 69, 74%, respectively, compared rates ?2 yr–1. These findings corroborated similar suppression Therefore, contribution exposed chronic needs accounting modeling peatland’s pools, given that exerts key control on carbon capture peatlands, globally.

Biological fixation of atmospheric nitrogen in the Mediterranean Sea

Nutrient concentration in the Mediterranean Sea is controlled by water exchanges through the Strait of Gibraltar and by atmospheric and terrestrial inputs. Various peculiarities in the nitrogen and phosphorus geochemical cycles are pointed out, namely a low N : P atomic ratio (6.4) in terrestrial discharges, and a budget well balanced for phosphorus (where terrestrial discharges amount to about...

SWAT Modeling of Nitrogen Dynamics Considering Atmospheric Deposition and Nitrogen Fixation in a Watershed Scale

The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) nitrogen (N) water quality model considers the artificial inputs associated with human activities, including point and nonpoint source pollution loads. Although SWAT has the ability to simulate atmospheric N deposition and fixation, they were not considered in the modeling research. N deposition from the air is an important and considerable pathway for ...

Biological nitrogen fixation, 1924-1974.

Crop rotation was practiced in ancient times by alternating the use of leguminous and nonleguminous plants. The basis for the benefit derived from this practice was not understood, but it was observed empirically that crops were improved and the condition of the soil was maintained better with rotation than by continual cropping with nonleguminous plants. Rotation was recognized as good husband...

“Biological Nitrogen Fixation” Book Summary

Biological nitrogen fixation is a very valuable alternative to nitrogen fertilizer. This process will be discussed in the “Biological Nitrogen Fixation” book. A wide array of free-living and associative nitrogen fixing organisms (diazotrophs) will be covered. The most extensively studied and applied example of biological nitrogen fixation is the symbiotic interaction between nitrogen fixing “rh...

Mechanism of Biological Nitrogen Fixation

Recently Phelps and Wilson (1) reported the occurrence of hydrogenase, the enzyme which activates molecular hydrogen, in nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Because HZ specifically inhibits nitrogen fixation by red clover plants inoculated with Rhizobium trijolii as well as by Azotobacter (2,3), possession of hydrogenase by these organisms may be more than merely fortuitous. The possibility must be consi...
